Welfare fraud and welfare abuse has been a constant problem.
Trump has vowed to reduce waste from government spending, and this looks to be one big area he’s targeting.
One thing that has always baffled me and made me very angry is the limitations placed on states for drug testing applicants. Like we owe them something. No! If they are applying for welfare, they should be required to prove some basic requirements like (1) they are actively looking for a job and (2) they are not on drugs! Simple!
And now Trump is lifting some goofy Obama regulations and imposing those new requirements.
Take a look, from The Political Insider:
While liberals continue to deny its existence, most Americans are keenly aware that welfare fraud is a real problem that needs to be destroyed.
For years, Republicans in Congress have tried to crack down on welfare abuse, hoping to give states the power to ensure that those receiving welfare benefits are truly deserving of such assistance. Democrats, of course, have fought any and all attempts at accountability.
But now, Congress has just taken a major step in their welfare reform agenda, voting to allow states to drug test individuals seeking unemployment benefits. President Trump is expected to sign the legislation in the coming days.
From Fox 6 Now:
The resolution — approved by the Senate on Tuesday, March 14th after passing in the House in February — nixes a Labor Department regulation that limited how many unemployment-benefit applicants states could test for drugs. The old rule, implemented under former President Barack Obama, mandated that states could only test applicants if they were looking for work in jobs that require regular drug screenings.
The repeal measure narrowly passed the Senate, 51–48, under the Congressional Review Act, which allows Congress to undo some recently implemented federal regulations with a simple majority. The House used the same maneuver to get it through their chamber last month with a 236–189 majority.
…
Republicans argued that the Obama-era regulation gave the federal government too much oversight on an issue that should have been decided at the state level.
“As we saw too often, the Obama administration went beyond its legal authority in creating legislation that limits the role of state governments,” Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said.
People who use illegal drugs should not have access to unemployment, or other welfare benefits. Hard-working Americans should not pay for other people’s drug habits.
